Adopting a Dog from Craigslist: 10 Tips for Successful Adoptions (Part 2)

6 – Check Multiple Sections

Craigslist ads for dogs are available in the for sale section as well as the pets section, under “community.” You will want to check both areas when you go to look for a dog. The for sale ads will most likely have the price of the pets on them, but the pets ads will not. You will have to contact the seller or owner to find out if there is a rehoming fee.

7 – Set up a Meeting with Your Pets

If you already have dogs in the house, you will need to set up a meeting with the new dog to ensure that it will get along with your current family. If you bring the dog home without letting him meet your pets, you may end up getting rid of it quickly or putting your pets in danger. Make sure the chemistry is right across the board, and you will have a much more pleasant experience.

8 – Ask for Vet Information

To be on the safe side, request the vet’s information before you go to pick up a dog. Contact the veterinarian to confirm that the dog is up to date on shots and has no major health concerns. If the dog has not been to the vet in a while, you may need to schedule an appointment on your own before making the adoption official.

9 – Prepare Your Home ahead of Time

Before your new pet comes home, have a place for him to sleep, eat, and feel protected in the new environment. You may want to introduce the pet to one room of the home first, just until he gets used to the surroundings. Some dogs adjust easier than others, so you will need to gauge your dog’s reaction on your own.

10 – Don’t Take on More Than You Can Handle

There is nothing wrong with wanting to rescue a dog from a bad situation, but make sure that is something you can truly take on. For instance, if the dog is going to need lifelong medical care, make sure that you are financially and emotionally stable enough to handle that. If you are paying money for a specialty breed through Craigslist, research the specific care that breed will need. If you think you are ready for it, you can follow the rest of the tips in this guide to ensure a successful adoption.
